Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson tipped Newcastle United to be in the race for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane. Robinson said,
“I’m surprised Bayern have let him get within ten months of his contract expiring.
“When a player goes that far without any negotiations starting you would expect him to move on to pastures new.
“I think Leroy Sane, with his reputation, what he’s done and who he’s played for, with no disrespect, would be looking to play Champions League football if he is to move on.
“He’s going to want to play regularly in the Champions League to enhance his international prospects with Germany as well.
“Newcastle would be able to offer him a huge financial package which would match the very best, but I think a player like Sane…
“Look, they’re up there at the moment, but I think if they don’t get Champions League football, I don’t think there’ll even be a conversation.
“If they do qualify for the Champions League, they’re very much in the frame and it’s worth having the conversation.
“Without Champions League football, I find it hard to see Leroy Sane joining Newcastle.”
Sane’s Impressive Record In German Football Last Season
Sane had a productive campaign at the Bavarian club recently after he put in a lot of impressive displays for them in the final third. The Germany international registered ten goals and 13 assists in 42 matches for Bayern Munich last season across all fronts.
The 28-year-old did well to average 2.7 shots, 2.7 key passes and 3.4 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 84.4% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Move In For Sane?
Sane has got the pace to get in behind the opponent’s backline and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet. He can strike the ball with venom from long range and has got the vision to orchestrate some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third.
The German sensation can chip in by scoring and creating a lot of important goals for his team. He mainly operates as a right-sided wide player but can also serve as a left-winger or play in the number ten position if needed.
Sane already knows the Premier League well from his time at Manchester City and won’t take much time to settle into life at Newcastle if Eddie Howe can find a way to get a deal done for him next year. Thus, the Magpies would be wise to move in for him next year.
