As reported by the Daily Star, Manchester United are looking to part ways with Harry Maguire in the January transfer window. The Premier League club are even ready to let the defender leave for a fee as low as £10m.
Manchester United want to get rid of Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire, who came to Manchester United in 2019, has had his own ups and downs. His role has seen a diminishing curve since Erik ten Hag came into the managerial role. Though he has rescued the side from difficult situations in recent weeks, his future remains uncertain.
Reportedly, ten Hag wants to sell Maguire as he doesn’t count on him. The English defender was even close to joining West Ham United in a £30m deal but it didn’t go through. He could’ve seen the exit door had the Red Devils signed Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.
A long injury to newly arrived Leny Yoro made Maguire’s stay more appealing. However, the club have got no plans to keep him for a long period of time and will be open to offloading him in the next couple of months.
Is that a wise decision?
Erik ten Hag made Manchester United sign Matthijs de Ligt this summer as he wanted the Dutch defender at his disposal. With his arrival, it was evident that Harry Maguire’s time at Old Trafford was coming to an end soon.
However, de Ligt has been performing below par and interestingly, Maguire has been doing better. Despite that ten Hag wants to sell the latter in the January window.
Talking about the decision, it can backfire as Maguire’s experience and qualities can come in handy towards the business end of the season. He has the ability to play the ball from the back, which de Light lacks specifically. Moreover, any injury at the centre-back position will leave the Dutch manager with fewer options.
