As per a report published in Caught Offside, Barcelona have failed to reach an agreement with Frenkie De Jong over a contract extension. It also states that Manchester United are the favourites to land the midfielder if he leaves the Spanish club.
Frenkie De Jong is back to fitness
Frenkie De Jong‘s career at Barcelona since arriving from Ajax has been decently well. While he hasn’t shown the levels everyone had anticipated, he has contributed well to the club’s success. Notably, he has been struggling with injuries in recent times.
De Jong made his return to the field after being sidelined for a long time due to an ankle injury. While he hasn’t reached his peak yet, he is expected to start matches for Barca soon. It will be interesting to see how he performs under the guidance of Hansi Flick.
Frenkie De Jong’s pursuit depends upon many factors
It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag badly wanted to sign Frenkie De Jong when he arrived at Manchester United. Having worked with him previously at Ajax and getting the best of him must have temped the Dutch manager to replicate it at Old Trafford.
However, De Jong always maintained his opinion of succeeding at Barcelona and not joining any other club. But the situation can change in the near future with his contract expiring in 2026.
Barcelona want to renew his contract as they don’t prefer risking losing him for free. However, the negotiations with both parties haven’t gone well yet. If the player refuses to sign an extension, the Spanish club won’t mind offloading him in the 2025 summer window.
Capitalizing on the situation, the Red Devils will have a fair chance to finally sign him. But it will also depend on whether ten Hag will be in the managerial role or not. As his side isn’t doing well so far, his job is at high risk.
