According to a report by i news, Manchester United are interested in bringing Gareth Southgate as their manager should they sack Erik ten Hag, who has delivered below-par results so far this season despite all the backings and signings.
Manchester United gave Erik ten Hag all he wanted
Manchester United didn’t have a memorable campaign last season as they failed to even secure a Champions League berth. However, the board showed their confidence in Erik ten Hag and even offered him a one-year extension after the FA Cup win.
The Red Devils also splashed a huge amount in the transfer window to sign the players that the Dutch manager wanted. With all these done, it’s quite natural for the club and the fans to expect good results from the team this season.
However, things have been completely opposite. ten Hag’s side are off to a disastrous start with only seven points after six Premier League games. If things don’t turn around in the coming weeks, ten Hag is likely to lose his job.
Erik ten Hag could be sacked soon
Manchester United have already started exploring options in the market to replace Erik ten Hag. One of the names that have emerged recently is Gareth Southgate.
Southgate spent eight years coaching England’s national side, taking them to two successive Euro Cup finals and a semi-final in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Though he couldn’t lift a big title, the Three Lions showed consistency during his tenure.
Given the experience and profile of the 54-year-old, he could be a good fit at Old Trafford. He can transform the club and bring them back into winning ways. Reportedly, the tactician has offers from several clubs but he is waiting for Manchester United‘s role. Also, the fact that Southgate is familar with the English footballing scene definitely helps.
