According to Football Insider, Manchester City are looking to bolster their midfield unit and have identified Atalanta midfielder Ederson as a top fit. They might make an attempt in the January window or wait until the next summer.
Ederson has been brilliant for Atalanta
After plying his trade at multiple clubs, Ederson signed for Atalanta in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength. He has emerged as one of the mainstays in the team and has also attracted eyeballs upon him.
Ederson played an instrumental role in helping Atalanta lift the Europa League last season. He featured in 53 games, netting seven goals and assisting once. He averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, and 0.8 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Brazilian midfielder is known for his defensive aspects in the middle of the park. He likes to keep things simple and control the tempo of the game. He is also good at ball interceptions and marking an aerial presence.
Ederson can fill Mateo Kovacic’s position in the long run
Manchester City were linked with Ederson throughout the summer window but they resisted from making an attempt. But with Rodri now injured and ruled out for the remainder of the season, the club might have to revisit their strategy.
The Citizens are reportedly keen on signing the Brazilian midfielder as they need a cover for Rodri. Ederson can surely do the job considering his similar playing style and role. He would fit well in Pep Guardiola’s system and help City achieve their targets.
The 25-year-old can also be a direct replacement for Mateo Kovacic, who might leave Etihad Stadium next year. Talking about the finances, Manchester City surely have the strength to pull off the signing. It will be interesting to see if they are willing to approach in the January window or not.
