According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City have joined the race for Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand. It comes after the Premier League side suffered a blow in the form of Rodri, who will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury.
Morten Hjulmand is a solid performer
Morten Hjulmand started his career at Admira Wacker and then represented Lecce before moving to Sporting CP last summer. In his debut season, he managed to impress everyone and became a mainstay in the squad, starting for the side regularly.
Hjulmand featured in 49 games last season, netting four goals and as many assists. He averaged 2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 0.8 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Danish plays as a defensive midfielder and puts in a lot of tackles and interceptions. He likes to distribute the ball forward and often makes line-breaking passes. He is also decent at dribbling and can take good shots from outside the box.
Morten Hjulmand is a good option
Manchester City dealt a heavy blow when they came to know that Rodri won’t be able to participate any further this season. Given the statue of the Spanish midfielder in Pep Guardiola‘s side, it will surely affect their performance directly or indirectly.
While the Citizens have Mateo Kovacic at their disposal, they need more depth and quality as the season is long. To fix that, the English giants have set Morten Hjulmand on their radar. The Sporting CP midfielder plays a similar role and has been impressive so far.
Just like Rodri, Hjulmand likes to play possession-based football and does the dirty work to keep the backline secured. Moreover, his goal-scoring abilities cannot be ignored too. The 25-year-old can be a good addition for many years to come for Manchester City. Though the player has a €80 million release clause, €50 million should be enough to get his signature.
