According to Caught Offside, Manchester City have identified FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a viable option to replace Ederson, whose future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain amid the rising interest from Saudi Arabia.
Diogo Costa is well-established at FC Porto
Diogo Costa has been associated with FC Porto for a long, making his senior team debut in 2019. However, he was allocated the primary goalkeeper role in 2021. Since then, he has taken huge strides, emerging as one of the best stop-stoppers in the world.
Costa managed to keep 17 clean sheets in 45 games last season while leaking 38 goals in the process. He has lightning-fast reflexes and remains focused throughout the game. He is excellent on the ball, making great passes.
Ederson’s future remains uncertain
Manchester City were open to selling Ederson this summer but only at their terms. They clearly had high demands for a goalkeeper who had just won four Premier League titles in a row. However, teams from Saudi couldn’t meet the criteria and the deal didn’t go through.
In the end, Ederson stayed at Etihad Stadium, which even Pep Guardiola didn’t mind. However, the same cannot be said about the next summer. Reports state that Saudi teams are ready to make the Brazilian one of the highest-paid footballers in the world.
Therefore, a move could be on the cards and Manchester City must remain prepared. While they already have Stefan Ortega at their disposal, even his future is uncertain. The German goalkeeper doesn’t want to waste his prime years and want to feature regularly. He will be open to leaving the English giant should a lucrative offer arrive.
Hence, City are keeping tabs on Diogo Costa as he remains a viable pick. He has the qualities and experience to play for the Premier League champions. While FC Porto rates him at €75 million, the Citizens aren’t willing to pay more than €40-45.
