As per a report published by Football Insider, Liverpool have an interest in Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Premier League club will move their cards to sign him only if Trent Alexander-Arnold departs next summer.
Jeremie Frimpong is rising well
A product of Manchester City, Jeremie Frimpong joined Bayer Leverkusen in the winter window of 2021. Since then, he has taken huge strides in his professional career. He has emerged as a mainstay in the squad, thanks to his impressive performances.
Frimpong contributed significantly to the German’s side success last season. He netted 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 games. He averaged 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes, and 1.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Dutch right-back is naturally good at defending but also contributes immensely in the offensive aspects. He has sheer pace and great dribbling skills. He sends good crosses into the box and possesses versatility to play in other roles.
A perfect replacement?
Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s career at Liverpool beyond this season remains uncertain. He is in the final year of his contract and is yet to sign a new contract. With Real Madrid’s interest heating up, there are speculations that he might be tempted to join the Spanish side.
Though Trent has signalled to sign a new contract at Anfield soon, there is still no assurance. Hence, the Reds want to keep the options open. They reportedly have identified Jeremie Frimpong as a perfect fit if the English defender leaves the club.
Frimpong has a similar attacking play style and could be a good fit in Arne Slot‘s system. He is already hitting the ground and can replicate his performances in the Premier League. The 23-year-old’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen runs until 2028, which means Liverpool will have to splash a big sum to sign him. For now, retaining the English right-back is the priority.
