According to Fichajes, Chelsea are monitoring Frenkie De Jong’s contract extension talks with Barcelona. Should the parties fail to reach an agreement, the Premier League club could take advantage of the situation to sign the midfielder.
Frenkie De Jong is fit again
Frenkie De Jong came into the limelight during his stint with Ajax. As a result, Barcelona splashed a big sum to sign him ahead of the 2019-20 season. All these years he has been a good performer though many believe that his best version is yet to come.
De Jong’s last season was short-lived after he suffered an ankle injury while playing against Real Madrid. He featured in 30 games and found the back of the net twice. He averaged 2.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 1.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Dutch midfielder is versatile to play a role in the midfield. He is press resistant and an excellent carrier of the ball. His technicality, passing, positioning, and attacking progress are all good though he needs to improve his shooting abilities.
Frenkie De Jong will be a good option
Frenkie De Jong’s contract at Barcelona runs until the end of 2026 and hence, the Spanish club are desperate for an extension. However, there has been no progress in the talks yet and the player’s future remains uncertain in the long run.
If both parties fail to find a solution, Chelsea would be willing to make an attempt. De Jong is appreciated by Enzo Maresca and he would like to have him at the cost of Carney Chukwuemeka, who is anyway linked to a move away from Stamford Bridge.
The 27-year-old’s addition will surely add stability to the Blues’ midfielder. His qualities and ability to control the tempo of the game will be key features. However, Chelsea might have to spend a handsome sum to get his signature away from a lucrative salary offer.
