As reported by Caught Offside, Chelsea are monitoring Lille midfielder Angel Gomes and could make a move to sign him next summer. However, they are set to face stiff competition from some major European clubs who are also present in the race.
Angel Gomes has reignited his career
Angel Gomes came through the Manchester United Academy but he failed to establish himself at Old Trafford. Hence, he moved to Lille in the summer of 2020, which has helped him in reviving his career. He has been a key member of the French club and has done well on the international stage.
Gomes featured in 45 games last season, netting twice and providing 10 assists. He averaged 1.1 shots, 1.5 key passes, and 0.7 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The English international is technically sound and extremely versatile in different roles in the midfield. He has good physical strength and does neat work in tight spaces. He can also dribble and provide key passes to create real threats.
Would Angel Gomes prefer to join Chelsea or Manchester United?
Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Angel Gomes when he was about to leave Manchester United. But as they already had enough reserves, they opted against it and the player also preferred going to Lille. However, the scenario has changed since the player has rejuvenated his career.
Gomes’ impressive run in recent times calls for attraction from major clubs. His versatility, physical strength, and goal-scoring abilities are someone a club can bank on. Hence, the Blues believe he could be a good addition to their unit.
However, Chelsea will have to go against the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United. It will also be interesting to see if the 24-year-old player will prefer joining Chelsea or entertain rejoining Old Trafford.
