In a recent report, journalists Dean Jones and Will Lancaster mentioned that Aston Villa are facing tough competition for Lille playmaker Angel Gomes. It is understood that the Magpies would have to rival Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and other clubs from Bundesliga and Serie A in pursuit of the English attacker next year.
Gomes’ Impressive Form In French Football
Gomes has managed to shine at times with his performances for Lille on the offensive third of the pitch. The London-born talent has found the back of the net once and secured one assist in nine appearances for the French outfit this season in various competitions.
The 24-year-old has given a good account of himself in the opposition half as he is averaging 0.8 shots, 1.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Ligue 1. He was even accurate with his ball distribution after completing 84.4% of his attempted passes in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Lille will run out at the end of this campaign which could give Aston Villa a chance to land him on a free transfer next summer.
Aston Villa Are Facing Tough Competition For Gomes: Is He Worth The Fight?
Gomes can strike the ball purely and with power from long range and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes on the offensive third of the field. He is a good dribbler with the ball as well and can chip by scoring some important goals for his team.
The English talent has already got some experience in English football from his time at Manchester United and won’t take much time to adapt to life at Aston Villa if Unai Emery can devise a way to bring him on board next year.
Gomes would no doubt add more firepower to the West Midlands club‘s attack. He has what it takes to compete for a regular starting spot at Villa Park in the coming years. At 24, the best is yet to come from Gomes. He would be well worth the fight, so the Villans should focus on getting a deal over the line for him this winter or at the end of this campaign.
