In a recent report, journalist Steve Kay revealed that Arsenal have set their sights on Napoli striker Alex Meret. It has been claimed that the Gunners are eyeing a move to bring the Italian goalie to North London next year.
Meret’s Impressive Form In Italian Football This Season
Meret has made a great start to this Serie A campaign after he put in a string of impressive displays as Napoli’s primary keeper. The Italy international has conceded four goals and kept four clean sheets in six matches for the Italian outfit this season in all competitions.
The 27-year-old has done well to average 2.8 long balls per 90 minutes in Serie A football. However, he has lacked quality when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 68.2% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club will run out at the end of this campaign which could give Arsenal a chance to sign him on a free transfer next summer.
Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Get Meret On Board?
Meret is a good handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few important saves at the back. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required but needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution if he wants to taste success at the highest level.
Standing at 1.90m, Meret is a towering presence inside his penalty box. We can expect the Italian talent to enhance the quality of Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s goalkeeping department. He is good enough to offer some healthy competition for David Raya at the North London club.
At 27, Meret is playing in his prime which makes him a great choice for the Gunners to consider in 2025. Furthermore, the talented goalie is currently on an expiring contract at Napoli, so Arsenal would be wise to try everything they can to get him on board when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign.
At the very least, Meret could help the London giants compete across all fronts in the coming years. Thus, Arsenal should focus on recruiting him next summer.
