In a recent report, The Sun stated that West Ham United have got long-term interest in Bayern Munich ace Leon Goretzka. It has been claimed that the Hammers are facing competition from Manchester United in pursuit of the German talent.
Goretzka’s Impressive Form In German Football
Goretzka had an excellent campaign at the German club after he put in a run of impressive performances for them at the centre of the park. The German midfielder made 42 appearances for Bayern Munich last season, netting six goals and earning 11 assists in multiple competitions.
The 29-year-old was a reliable performer for the Bavarian outfit based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 1.9 shots and 1.1 key passes per game in the Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing possession from midfield, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 89.4% in the German top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Bayern Munich will run out in the summer of 2026 which could open the door for the Hammers to sign him on the cheap at the end of this season.
Should West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui Move In For Goretzka?
Goretzka is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range.
The German sensation has also got the vision to engineer some promising chances for his teammates in the final third. However, he has struggled to earn regular first-team starts for Vincent Kompany’s side this season and could prefer a change of scenery in search of greener pastures next year. The Bayern Munich talent is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also perform in the number ten position or as a defensive midfielder if required.
Thus, West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui would be wise to move in for Goretzka in the January transfer period or next summer as he would add a lot of quality to their midfield department. However, there are some concerns over whether the German midfield ace can cope with the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football if the Hammers manage to bring him to the London Stadium in the future.
