In a recent report, The Telegraph mentioned that Newcastle United remain big admirers of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the English talent in the January transfer period.
Guehi’s Impressive Form In English Football
Guehi experienced a solid campaign at the London club after he put in a string of impressive performances for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The English centre-back played in 29 matches for Crystal Palace last season, securing one assist across all competitions.
The 24-year-old was a good performer when defending inside his half and did well to average 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even careful when distributing possession from the back based on his pass completion rate of 87.2% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Guehi’s current contract at Selhurst Park will expire in the summer of 2026, so Newcastle would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about landing him this January.
Is Guehi A Good Fit For Newcastle United?
Guehi is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can also play his way out from the back.
The English talent is currently enjoying his football at Crystal Palace and could raise his stock even more in the coming months. Thus, Newcastle would do well to get a deal done for him this January.
Guehi would add more bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s defence. He is good enough to be a success story at the Tyneside club. Hence, Howe should focus on trying everything in his power to bring him to St. James’ Park when the transfer window commences at the start of next year.
At 24, Guehi will only get better with each season. Therefore, he would be a great fit for Newcastle‘s needs in the long run. Guehi has already proven himself to be a capable defender in the Premier League and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Tyneside club.
