As revealed by Caught Offside, Manchester United were interested in signing Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries this summer. Both parties even held talks to discuss the terms of the transfer but unfortunately, the deal didn’t materialise.
Denzel Dumfries plays regularly for the Netherlands
Denzel Dumfries established himself as an integral part of Inter Milan since joining them in the summer of 2021 from PSV. Though he isn’t a fixed starter, he has done an excellent job whenever he took onto the field for the Serie A club.
Dumfries played a crucial role in the league title victory last season. He featured in 36 games, netting four goals and providing six assists. He averaged 0.7 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, and 0.8 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Dutch defender plays as a left-back and likes to attack the space in the final third. He joins the attack whenever possible and tries to be directly involved. For defending, he uses his explosiveness, strength, and aerial abilities.
Will Manchester United go after Denzel Dumfries again in 2025?
Manchester United looked to sign Denzel Dumfries in the summer window due to recurring fitness issues of their left-backs. Last season, they suffered in that area and wanted to secure the position better.
The Red Devils and Inter Milan agreed on a swap deal of Dumfries and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. However, the deal didn’t go through as the latter joined West Ham United.
The 29-year-old Dutchman could’ve been a great addition to the unit. He is experienced and would provide his determining skills in the third final. His game-plan and physicality would’ve suited the Premier League perfectly.
Dumfries is in the final year of his contract at the Serie A club. While the Italian club want to tie him with another short-term contract, it’s unclear whether the player will accept that. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United will return with their interest in the 2025 summer or not.
