As reported by Football Insider, Manchester City are seriously considering signing a midfielder in the January transfer window. This comes after key member, Rodri, suffered a blow against Arsenal and will miss the remainder of the season.
Rodri’s injury is a big blow
During the recent game against Arsenal, Pep Guardiola had to sub for Rodri after he picked up a knee injury. Later, as the reports came, it was revealed that the midfielder has suffered an ACL injury and is likely to remain sidelined for 7-8 months.
It means Rodri will no longer be able to participate in the 2024-25 campaign, which is a big blow to the Citizens. Given his important role in the side, Guardiola must be sweating despite having Mateo Kovacic at his disposal.
It’s understandable as the winning rate of Manchester City reduces drastically in the absence of Rodri. Though there is no perfect replacement available, the English giant will try to find a suitable fit and bring him in the January window.
What’s on Manchester City’s mind?
It’s important to understand that though Rodri is a defensive midfielder on the paper, he also contributes to the offensive front. For now, Manchester City are linked with multiple midfielders and can acquire one of the team to keep the ship sailing.
One of the names that the Citizens are heavily linked to is Nicolo Barella. His experience and proven records will be something the club can count on. He is also versatile and can contribute to all aspects of the game. However, Inter Milan are unlikely to let him go in the winter and also demands a premium fee. Tijjani Reijnders is also a viable target on the list.
The report states that Manchester City will probably look to sign someone who can contribute for many years to come rather than finding a temporary fix. The ongoing 115 charges case against the Premier League champions might also become a factor in January.
