According to Football Insider, Manchester City are planning to sign a new striker in the winter transfer window. The club is eyeing someone who can replace departee Julian Alvarez and provide a cover for Erling Haaland in the squad.
Julian Alvarez left for Atletico Madrid
Julian Alvarez, who came to Manchester City in the winter of 2022, made a mark in a short time. He rose through the ranks and became an integral contributor to the squad. Thanks to his consistent performances at the club level and especially the 2022 World Cup.
However, Alvarez decided to leave Etihad Stadium ahead of the 2024-25 campaign as he wanted to be a starter. He joined Atletico Madrid, who splashed a massive £82m sum to sign the Argentine. While many speculated that the Citizens would surely sign a striker in the summer, they didn’t go after anyone.
Pep Guardiola’s side had a deal for Savinho long ago and Ilkay Gundogan came unexpectedly after Barcelona decided to part ways due to their financial crisis. This displayed that the Spanish manager was already happy with the squad he possessed and didn’t want to make a significant addition.
Tough to sign a big name in the winter window
Manchester City kicked off the new season with flying colours before the international break came in. They have won all their ties with Erling Haaland taking centre stage. However, they still don’t have an all-out striker for the Norgeiwan in case they need it.
While the Citizens have a couple of names who can don the false nine roles, they might need a proper striker going deep into the season. In case Haaland suffers an injury, Pep Guardiola‘s side could be affected badly, that too during an important phase of the season.
Hence, to be well prepared for such a scenario, Manchester City are ready to acquire a striker in the winter window. However, it remains to be seen if they will go after a notable name or settle for an average performer just for the sake of having a replacement.
