According to The Sun, Manchester City are considering making a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi next summer. The former club are impressed with the player’s progress and want to acquire his services to improve their backline.
Marc Guehi has been impressive so far
A product of Chelsea, Marc Guehi joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021. His impressive performances on the field established him as an integral part of the side. Safe to say that he has been one of the formidable defenders in the Premier League over the past few seasons.
Guehi was sidelined for three months last season due to a knee injury. He managed to feature only in 29 games in which he registered an assist. He averaged 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 3.5 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The English defender is an intelligent player who plays as a centre-back. He is very strong, well-positioned and wins a lot of 1v1 duels. Though he doesn’t have an ideal height for a defender, he manages to do neat work even in the air.
Why does Manchester City want Marc Guehi?
Manchester City’s interest in Marc Guehi shouldn’t be too surprising at all. The Premier League champions are always on the hunt for great talents and want to acquire them. The case with the young defender is no different though one can consider that the club already have enough centre-backs.
The need for a defender might arise if anyone leaves next summer. Hence, a move for Guehi shouldn’t be ruled out at all. He can be a good procurement in the long run and would enhance the quality of the defensive pack for sure.
Regarding finances, Crystal Palace wanted somewhere around £70-75 million as they recently rejected Newcastle United‘s bids. However, as the player’s contract will expire in 2026, the former club wouldn’t be able to demand a premium fee in the 2025 summer.
