According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton next summer. The former club want to add the youngster to their disposal amid the uncertainty over the future of Rodri.
Adam Wharton has interest from major clubs
Adam Wharton arrived at Crystal Palace in the winter from Blackburn Rovers. In a short time, he not only impressed everyone but also established himself as a key player. Impressed by his displays, Gareth Southgate also included him in the 2024 Euro squad.
Though Wharton didn’t get a chance to represent, he remains a lucrative talent for the years to come. He featured in 45 games last season, netting twice and providing six assists. He averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 0.6 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Englishman is a defensive midfielder who can dictate the flow of the game. He is technically sound and likes to keep things simple. Interestingly, he makes a lot of progressive passes, allowing his teammates to keep attacking.
A future replacement for Rodri?
Manchester City’s midfielder Rodri‘s future has come under the radar in recent times. The Spanish has incoming interest from multiple clubs, especially Real Madrid. The Spanish club have reportedly made him their priority for next summer.
With Pep Guardiola likely to depart the club at the end of the ongoing season, there is also uncertainty over the continuity of Rodri. Hence, the Citizens want to remain prepared for such a scenario considering the importance of the player in their squad.
Manchester City believes Adam Wharton could be a long-term replacement for the 29-year-old. The youngster has a similar play style and has already impressed in the English league. He can be turned into an elite midfielder should he continue to develop his game and add more dimensions. Apart from City, Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Wharton.
