In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Manchester City are keen on recruiting Bayer 04 Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz. It is understood that Pep Guardiola’s side are keeping tabs on the German playmaker.
Wirtz’s Brilliant Season In The Bundesliga
Wirtz had an excellent campaign at the German club after he put in a string of match-winning displays for them in the final third. The German talent played in 49 matches for Bayer 04 Leverkusen last season, scoring 18 times and securing 20 assists in the process across various competitions.
The 21-year-old gave a good account of himself in the opponent’s half as he averaged 2.2 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. He even distributed the ball accurately after completing 84.6% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Bayer Leverkusen will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for Man City to land him on a cut-price deal next year.
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Move In For Wirtz?
Wirtz is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can engineer a few meaningful chances for his teammates to find the back of the net. He can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range and did well to add plenty of goals and assists to his game last season.
The German whizkid is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also play as a winger on either flank if required. However, there are some question marks over whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League.
At 21, Wirtz has the potential to be a generational talent. Hence, Man City would do well to lure him to the Etihad Stadium in the future. Wirtz would undeniably enhance the quality of the Mancunian club’s attack in the long run. He might even form a productive partnership with Erling Haaland at Man City in the coming seasons.
Therefore, it makes sense for Pep Guardiola to move in for Wirtz this January or at the end of this campaign. He is already good enough to help Man City challenge for some major silverware over the next decade.
