As per Football Insider, Liverpool have identified two areas they need to bolster in the January transfer windows. The priority target will be a holding midfielder as Arne Slot demands and the next on the list of a left footed centre-back.
Liverpool’s summer window summary
Liverpool have had a quiet summer window where they managed to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, whom they sent back on a loan deal. A fallout between Federico Chiesa and Juventus allowed the English giants to capitalize on the situation and sign the Italian winger.
However, the Reds wanted to sign a new holding midfielder after receiving a request from Arne Slot. They had Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as their priority and even made attempts to lure him away. However, the Spanish midfielder decided against joining Anfield and signed a new contract with his boyhood club.
This left the Reds in a bitter taste as they didn’t have enough time to seal another deal in the window. It means Slot would have to use the available players in the form of Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo for the concerned role.
Liverpool’s plans for the January window
Liverpool understand the need to strengthen certain areas if they want to remain competitive. Their first priority remains signing a holding midfielder in the January window. However, they will not return to Martin Zubimendi and will explore other options.
On the other hand, the Reds will also try signing a left-footed centre-back. Interestingly, they don’t have a left-footed centre-back in the squad. Over the years, Virgil van Dijk has owned the position and been an automatic pick.
However, as the Dutch is on the wrong side of 30, Liverpool are desperate to find a replacement. Even if van Dijk signs a new contract, the club will explore the options in the market. But getting a big name in the winter window might be a bit tough.
