According to Christian Falk via CaughtOffside, Liverpool are interested in acquiring the services of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah next summer. The experienced campaigner will be out of the contract in less than 12 months.
Jonathan Tah’s future is uncertain
Jonathan Tah has gone from strength to strength since joining Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015. He has been a great servant to the club and one of their mainstays. His impressive numbers over the past decade are a testimony to that statement.
Even last season, Tah played in an integral role in the team’s success. He featured in 48 games, netting six goals and providing an assist. He averaged 0.7 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 3 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The German defender is an aggressive centre-back, who thrives when it comes to physical battles. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet and marks an aerial dominance. He also has the speed to keep up with pacy attackers.
A short-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk?
Jonathan Tah remains an important part of Bayer Leverkusen’s side. However, his future has come under the radar as he has less than 12 months left. With no progress over the contract renewal, he is very much in line to take an exit next summer.
Banking on the situation, Liverpool can acquire Tah for free in the 2025 summer window. His experience and qualities will improve their backline immediately. He can provide some good years at Anfield and then be offloaded easily.
As Virgil van Dijk is in the twilight of his career, the Dutch defender will have to be replaced soon. Liverpool can use the 28-year-old German defender to fill his shoes. While Tah provides the cover, the club can eye another defender or nourish a talent to take over.
