In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Liverpool are set to offer Virgil Van Dijk a new contract. It has been claimed that the Reds are keen on tying the Dutch centre-back down to a new deal but the player would have the final say about his future at the Merseyside club.
Van Dijk’s Solid Season At Merseyside
Van Dijk had another impressive campaign at Liverpool as he was responsible for putting in a lot of solid displays at the heart of their defence. The Dutch talent scored four goals and grabbed a couple of assists in 48 matches for the Reds last season across all competitions.
The 33-year-old was a dominant presence inside his half based on his average of 1.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even excellent when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 91.5% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Van Dijk’s current deal at Anfield will expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, it is no surprise that the Merseyside giants are eager to tie him down to a new deal this year.
Liverpool Are Set To Offer Van Dijk A New Contract: Good Move For Both Parties?
Van Dijk loves a tackle and can sense the danger well to earn the ball back for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually clears the danger when required and can play his way out from inside his half.
The Dutch defensive ace can even use his strong 1.95m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. At the moment, Van Dijk remains one of the most important players in Liverpool‘s first team.
Therefore, Arne Slot would do well to tie him down to a new contract. At 33, Van Dijk might still have a few good seasons left in him to play at his best as long as he can steer clear of injuries. Thus, the Dutch centre-half’s contract extension would be a good move for both the player and the Merseyside club as they look to bring more success back to Anfield in the future.
