Rangers were determined to bounce back this afternoon following a dismal Old Firm derby defeat before the international break. They travelled to Tannadice Park to lock horns with Dundee United and the gaffer Philippe Clement made some tactical tweaks to improve their performance. While they could have done better on a few occasions to convert those chances, an early goal from Tom Lawrence ensured all three points from this tricky away test.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their 1-0 win against Dundee United.
Jack Butland: 7
Hardly had to make a stop, but the Englishman was alert between the sticks as he claimed and punched the crosses away to secure a clean sheet.
James Tavernier: 7
Had a better outing in terms of his defensive contributions. Made some overlapping runs and whipped in a few crosses and long balls from the right-hand flank.
John Souttar: 8
Dominated the aerial duels, made several no-nonsense clearances and showed great composure with his passing game.
Robin Propper: 8
Did well to partner with Souttar in the heart of the backline. Went for tackles, blocks and duels to deal with the Tangerines’ moves. A great boost for the Dutchman after a nervy start to his Rangers stint.
Jefte: 7.5
Was lively from the left with marauding runs, dribbles and crosses. Also, won the defensive duels, made crucial interceptions and timely tackles.
Kieran Dowell: 7.5
A surprise start for the Englishman who mostly operated box-to-box as a ball carrier. Had highs and lows during the contest but he did well overall to control the midfield game. Was replaced by Dujon Sterling midway through the second half.
Connor Barron: 7.5
The young Scotsman impressed once again as a deep-lying playmaker. Was spot-on with his tackles, covered a lot of space and showed great intent to recover possession time and again.
Mohamed Diomande: 7
Created a few goal-scoring opportunities while featuring as a ‘number 8’. Was combative in the centre of the pitch but his work rate reduced after the hour mark. Clement took him off in favour of Nicolas Raskin.
Tom Lawrence: 8.5
A great goal from the Welshman made all the difference at Tannadice Park. Kept on causing menace in the United defence with his flair, finesse and directness. Forced Jack Walton to make a few more saves throughout the fixture.
Oscar Cortes: 6.5
Made it to the starting XI having recovered from an injury sustained during the opening gameweek. Forced Walton to make a save but was taken off at half-time for the debutant Nedim Bajrami.
Cyriel Dessers: 7.5
Set it up perfectly for Lawrence to find the net early into the game. Made way for Hamza Igamane midway through the second half.
Rangers Subs vs Dundee United
Nedim Bajrami: 6.5
Showed glimpses of his quality on his Rangers debut.
Hamza Igamane: 6.5
Looked sharp with his runs in and around the box in the closing minutes.
Nicolas Raskin: 6.5
A bit rusty at times, but the minutes this afternoon should help the Belgian rebuild his fitness before grabbing a starting status.
Dujon Sterling: 6
Injected freshness and high work ethics in the middle of the park.
