In a recent report, journalist Rudy Galetti revealed that Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is generating interest from Turkey this month. It has been stated that Fenerbahce are showing interest in recruiting the English defender on a loan deal.
Chilwell’s Important Role At Stamford Bridge Last Season
Chilwell served as a good, rotational piece in Chelsea’s squad last season despite missing a lot of games for them due to injuries. The English talent secured one assist in 21 matches for the Blues in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The 27-year-old was a positive influence on the left flank based on his average of 1.2 tackles, 1.3 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.1 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing the ball after making 80.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West London club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, there is no immediate need for Enzo Maresca to cash in on him this month.
Should Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Cut Chilwell Loose?
Chilwell is a good dribbler with the ball and can create some decent chances for his teammates from the left flank. He can strike the ball well from long range and is a solid tackler of the ball. The English talent can read the danger well and usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He is primarily a left-back but can also function as a left-sided wide player if required.
At the moment, Chilwell is not a guaranteed starter at Stamford Bridge. He has to find a way to earn regular first-team starts if he wants to make the most of the remainder of his career. Thus, it is only fair to the player if Chelsea allow him to leave in search of more game time in the future.
At 27, Chilwell is about to enter his prime, so it makes sense for the Blues to loan the left-back out rather than cut him loose this month. He might come back from his loan spell in Turkey as a better version of himself next summer. With all things considered, Enzo Maresca should consider letting Chilwell leave on loan before assessing his future once again at the end of the campaign.
