In a recent report, Marca claimed that Barcelona remain keen on recruiting Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana. It has been stated that the Catalan club have identified the Belgian midfield ace as a transfer target.
Onana’s Impressive Form At Goodison Park
Onana had a solid campaign at Everton recently as he managed to put in a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Belgian talent made 37 appearances for the Toffees last season, netting three times and earning one assist in all competitions.
The 23-year-old was a good performer at both ends of the pitch and did well to average 2.4 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in the Premier League. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after making 84.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Aston Villa will expire in the summer of 2029 which could make it difficult for Barcelona to sign him on the cheap next year.
Is Onana A Good Choice For Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick?
Onana loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive. Standing at 1.95, Onana is a towering presence in the air. The Belgian talent can even strike the ball with power from long range and can create the odd chance for his teammates up top. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder if required.
Onana would bring more quality and depth to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fight for regular first-team football at the Nou Camp in the coming years.
At 23, the Dakar-born sensation has got a bright future ahead and would be a terrific choice for the Catalan club to consider next year. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Spain if Barcelona manage to bring him on board.
However, Onana is still under a long-term contract at Aston Villa, so Flick would have to make a big offer if he wants to recruit him in the future.
