In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Barcelona are among the clubs hoping to land Olympique Marseille winger Mason Greenwood. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club would have to rival Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the race to land the English wide player next year.
Greenwood’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1 This Season
Greenwood has made an excellent start to this campaign as he has put in a handful of productive displays for Marseille in the final third. The 22-year-old has banged in five goals and grabbed one assist in four matches for the French outfit this season across all fronts.
The Bradford-born talent has caught the eye on the right flank by averaging 3.3 shots and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He was even tidy when distributing the ball in the final third based on his pass completion rate of 82.5% in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
Greenwood is under contract at the French club until the summer of 2029 which could make it difficult for Barcelona to sign him on the cheap next year.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Go For Greenwood?
Greenwood is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball out on the flanks. He can create the odd chance for his teammates up top and can shoot the ball with venom and precision from long range.
The English footballer is primarily a right-winger but can also play as a left-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if needed. He has already got some experience in La Liga under his belt and won’t take much time to settle into life at Barcelona if Hansi Flick can devise a way to get him on board next year.
We can expect Greenwood to add more firepower to the Catalan club’s attack. He has what it takes to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Nou Camp in the coming years. At 22, Greenwood would only improve with each season, so Flick would be wise to go for a player of his skill set this January or at the end of this campaign.
