After a much-needed international break, depleted Rangers would look to regroup under Philippe Clement’s tutelage on Sunday lunchtime. They will travel to Tannadice Park to lock horns with Dundee United following a dreadful Old Firm defeat against bitter rivals Celtic.
While the Gers are desperately looking for momentum after a dreadful start to their Premiership season, the newly-promoted Tangerines have impressed with an unbeaten league run ahead of hosting the Light Blues this weekend. Despite dominating this fixture in recent meetings, Rangers must step up the game to avoid another setback and stay within five points of league leaders Celtic.
Predicted 4-2-3-1 Rangers Lineup To Face Dundee United
Defence
Jack Butland was below par against the Hoops in the previous gameweek. However, he remains the ‘number 1’ even though the Gers have roped Liam Kelly to challenge and cover the Englishman between the sticks.
The egress of Connor Goldson has left a void in the heart of the backline. Robin Propper has failed to live up to the expectations since his summer transfer from FC Twente, but the Dutchman is expected to grab a starting status alongside John Souttar in deep defence. Skipper James Tavernier has been heavily criticized for his lacklustre performances, and it remains to be seen whether the gaffer relies on him down the right ahead of Neraysho Kasanwirjo who has joined on a season-long loan from Feyenoord.
A hamstring injury has ruled left fullback Ridvan Yilmaz out for weeks. Jefte is likely to keep his place with academy prospect Robbie Fraser knocking on the doors. Veteran Leon Balogun, along with young duo Clinton Nsiala and Leon King, should continue as the central defensive covers.
Midfield
Nicolas Raskin, who was involved as a substitute against the Bhoys, must be restored to the centre of the pitch replacing Connor Barron. Mohamed Diomande could form a ‘double pivot’ alongside the Belgian with Barron, Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell set to offer depth and flexibility as substitutes.
Although Oscar Cortes played an hour in a closed-door game against Motherwell, Clement must not hand him an immediate start amid Rabbi Matondo’s injury absence. Ross McCausland should be available overcoming a knock sustained during the international break, but the deadline day signing Nedim Bajrami might get a nod down the left against Dundee United. Tom Lawrence needs to offer more work rate and creative spark as a ‘number 10’, also, Czechia international Václav Černý is expected to retain his starting status over Hamza Igamane.
Attack
Cyriel Dessers missed some key chances at Parkhead, yet he remains the most impressive Rangers star with 5 goals in 7 games. Considering the form and persistent fitness woes of Danilo, the Nigerian centre-forward must spearhead the attack across competitions.
