In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus claimed that Aston Villa are set to rival Arsenal for Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a move to bring the Spanish midfield ace to Villa Park next year.
Guerra’s Impressive Form In La Liga
Guerra had an impressive campaign at the Spanish club after he produced a series of solid displays for them in the middle of the park. The 21-year-old found the back of the net four times and secured one assist in 40 matches for Valencia last season across multiple competitions.
The Spanish talent was a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.2 shots and 1.1 dribbles per game in La Liga. However, he needs to improve his ball distribution, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 74.1% in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, the Villans would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about winning the race for Guerra next year.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Move In For Guerra?
Guerra is a solid tackler of the ball and can make the odd interception for his side at the centre of the park. He usually clears the danger when needed and can strike the ball with power from long range. The Spanish midfielder can even make a few clever runs with the ball from midfield. He usually plays as a box-to-box midfielder but can also operate as a holding midfielder if needed.
However, only time will tell whether Guerra can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Still, Aston Villa would be wise to move in for him as he would inject more bite and steel into Unai Emery’s midfield.
At 21, Guerra has the potential to be a future star in European football. Plus, he is already good enough to challenge for a regular starting place at Villa Park next season. Therefore, Emery should focus on getting a deal done for the Spanish youngster this January or next summer. However, the Aston Villa boss needs to be patient with his progress before he can unlock the best out of the youngster.
