In a recent tweet, journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that West Ham United could make a late move for Mats Hummels who is currently a free agent. It is believed that the Hammers are monitoring the situation of the German centre-back and could offer him a chance to seal a move to the London Stadium this summer.
Hummels’ Impressive Form At Signal Iduna Park Last Season
Hummels has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and proved his worth as a solid performer for Borussia Dortmund in the previous campaign. The Germany international played in 40 matches for the German outfit last season, scoring four goals and picking up one assist across all competitions.
The 35-year-old gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the pitch as he averaged 2.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per game in the Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the back after making 89.3% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
Hummels is a free agent at the moment which makes him an affordable choice for the Hammers to consider this off-season.
Is Hummels A Good Option For West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui?
Hummels is a decent tackler of the ball and can make a few important interceptions for his team on the defensive third of the field. He usually clears his lines when required and excels at playing his way out from inside his half.
Standing at 1.91m, the German talent can be a dominant presence in the air as well. However, at 35, he is a player on the decline and would only serve as a short-term fix to West Ham‘s defensive concerns.
Still, there is no denying that Hummels would bring more quality and experience to Julen Lopetegui’s defence and could help the East London club compete across all fronts next season.
Hummels has also got the winning mindset to be a real asset to Lopetegui’s squad. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Still, Hummels would be a decent option for West Ham in the short term.
