In a recent report, journalists Danny Rust and Dean Jones stated that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes as a target for this transfer window. It is believed that Spurs are eyeing a late move to bring the Brazilian talent to North London this summer.
Gomes’ Impressive Form In The Premier League
Gomes enjoyed a solid campaign at the Midlands club recently as he put in a series of decent displays for them at the centre of the park. The 23-year-old scored two goals and grabbed one assist in 38 matches for Wolves last season in all competitions.
The Brazilian talent anchored the midfield with conviction based on his average of 3.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after making 83.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Gomes’ current deal at the Molineux Stadium will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for Spurs to snap him up on a cut-price deal this month.
Is Gomes A Good Fit For Tottenham Hotspur?
Gomes is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and excels at playing his way out from midfield.
The Portuguese talent is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also operate as a holding midfielder if asked to do so. We can expect him to inject more bite and steel into Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s midfield department.
Gomes is good enough to compete for a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season. At 23, the best is yet to come from the Portuguese midfield ace, so Spurs would do well to bring him to the English capital in this summer transfer period.
Gomes has already got some Premier League experience under his belt and won’t take much time to adjust to life at the North London club. Therefore, he would be a good fit for Tottenham’s needs at the moment before the end of this transfer window.
