In a recent report, respected journalist Rudy Galetti claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Brentford striker Ivan Toney as a target for this summer transfer window. It has been stated that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring the English forward to North London this off-season.
Toney’s Impressive Form In The Premier League
Toney showed a few glimpses of what he could do for the Bees in the previous campaign as he managed to put in a few impressive displays for them in the final third. The English talent participated in 17 matches for Brentford last season, finding the back of the net four times and grabbing a couple of assists in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old led the line well for Brentford based on his average of 3.0 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the English top tier. However, he was a bit careless when distributing possession deep inside the opponent’s half after completing just 55.7% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the English club will run out at the end of next season which could open the door for Spurs to snap him up on the cheap later this summer.
What Will Toney Bring To Tottenham Hotspur?
Toney excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He can be a streaky goal-scorer in the final third and can create the odd chance for his teammates up top. The English talent can also make a few driving runs with the ball up top. However, he has to improve his link-up play on the offensive end of the field.
At 28, Toney is playing in his prime and could help Spurs challenge across all competitions in the coming seasons. We can expect him to bring more goals to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s attack.
Toney is good enough to nail down a regular starting place at the North London club next season. He already knows the Premier League well and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With all things considered, Postecoglu would be wise to go all out to bring Toney to the London club before the end of this summer transfer window.
