In a recent tweet, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul stated that Real Madrid wanted to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero earlier this summer but Spurs refused to let him leave. It has been claimed that Los Blancos were willing to launch a move for the Argentine centre-back this off-season.
Romero’s Impressive Season In The Premier League
Romero had a solid campaign at the North London club recently as he was responsible for putting in a string of dominant displays at the centre of Angelos Postecoglu’s defence. The Argentina international scored five times in 34 matches for Tottenham last season across all competitions.
The 26-year-old was a rock at the back for Spurs and deserves credit for averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per game in Premier League football. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from inside his half based on his pass completion rate of 91.9% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Madrid club will expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, Los Blancos would have to make a convincing offer if they want to stand a chance of signing Romero this summer.
Should Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti Go Back In For Romero This Summer?
Romero is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some important interceptions for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and is comfortable at playing his way out from the back.
The Argentine talent can even use his strong 1.85m frame to make life tough for the opposition attackers in the air. He has proven himself to be a reliable defender in Premier League football. However, it remains to be seen whether the South American centre-back can make a smooth transition to life in Spain.
Romero would have added a lot of quality to Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti’s defence. He might even help Los Blancos challenge for plenty of major trophies over the next few years.
At 26, Romero is playing in his prime and has what it takes to be a success story at the Madrid club. Thus, Ancelotti would be wise to go back in for him this summer or in 2025.
