In a recent tweet, Argentine journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos stated that Newcastle United are set to launch a move for Olympiacos midfielder Santiago Hezze this month. It has been claimed that the Magpies are prepared to make an offer worth more than €20m to land the Argentine talent in this transfer window.
Hezze’s Impressive Form In European Football Last Season
Hezze had a solid campaign at the Greek club recently after he produced a handful of dominant displays in the middle of the park. The 22-year-old scored one goal and secured three assists in 50 matches for Olympiacos last season across various competitions.
The Argentine midfield ace managed to catch the eye in Europe where he averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.3 key passes per 90 minutes in the UEFA Europa League. He was even careful when distributing the ball from midfield as he made 85.9% of his attempted passes in European football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Greek club will expire in the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for the Magpies to land him on a cut-price deal this month.
Should Newcastle United Boss Sean Dyche Snap Hezze Up This Summer?
Hezze is a tough-tackling midfielder who can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He has also got the vision to create some promising chances for others around him in the final third.
The Argentine sensation is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder or play in the number ten position if asked to do so. However, there are some concerns over whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football if Newcastle manage to bring him on board this summer.
We can expect Hezze to add more bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s midfield. He could go on to form a dominant partnership with Bruno Guimaraes at St. James’ Park over the next few years. At 22, Hezze has the potential to be a future star in European football. Thus, Howe should focus on going all out to snap him up before the end of this transfer period.
