In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that Newcastle United are in talks to land Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer. It has been claimed that the Magpies have opened negotiations to acquire the services of the English centre-back this off-season.
Guehi’s Impressive Form In The Premier League
Guehi had a solid campaign at Selhurst Park recently as he put in a series of impressive displays for the Eagles on the defensive third of the field. The 24-year-old picked up one assist in 29 appearances for Crystal Palace last season on all fronts.
The English talent was a dominant presence when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back after completing 87.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the London club will expire in the summer of 2026. Hence, the Magpies would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting the English defensive ace in this transfer window.
Is Guehi A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Guehi loves a tackle and can scan the danger well to secure possession back for his team on the defensive third of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive. The English talent is a tidy passer of the ball as well and has got some valuable experience in Premier League football. Hence, Newcastle would do well to lure him to St. James’ Park before the end of this transfer period.
Guehi would bring more bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s defence and could help the Magpies cope with fixture congestion better in the future. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular starting spot at the Tyneside club next season.
At 24, Guehi will only get better with each season. Therefore, he would be a great choice for Newcastle United to pursue this summer. He has already begun to prove his worth in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at St. James’ Park if Howe can find a way to land him soon.
