In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Newcastle United are hoping to make a late move for Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It has been stated that the Magpies are eager to get a deal done for the English striker before the end of this month.
Calvert-Lewin’s Recent Form At Goodison Park
The 27-year-old struggled to find consistency at the Merseyside club in the previous campaign but managed to catch the eye at times for them in Premier League football. Calvert-Lewin scored eight times and earned three assists in 38 appearances for the Toffees last season across all competitions.
The Sheffield-born forward was a decent performer in the final third and deserves some credit for averaging 2.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he was a bit careless when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 56.9% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Calvert-Lewin’s current contract at Goodison Park will run out at the end of next season. Hence, the Magpies could recruit the experienced striker on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.
Is Calvert-Lewin A Decent Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Calvert-Lewin is proficient at creating some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He can create the odd chance for others around him on the offensive end of the field. Standing at 1.89m, the English talent can use his strong frame to win some aerial duels for his team in the opponent’s half. However, he has to find a way to improve his link-up play up top.
Calvert-Lewin would add more firepower to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s frontline. He would be a good option for the Magpies to call upon off the bench. The English talent has got a wealth of experience in English football and won’t take much time to settle into life at St. James’ Park.
At 27, Calvert-Lewin is enjoying his prime right now which makes him a good choice for the Tyneside club to consider in this transfer period. However, he would struggle to compete with Alexander Isak for a regular starting role in Howe’s first team.
