On Sunday’s print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) mentioned that Newcastle United are hoping to land Toulouse defender Logan Costa this summer. It has been stated that the Magpies are set to rival West Ham United and Bologna in the race to land the Cape Verde international.
Costa’s Impressive Form In French Football
The France-born talent was a rock at the back for Toulouse in the previous campaign when he put in a run of dominant displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. Costa scored one goal and secured one assist in 38 matches for the French outfit last season across all fronts.
The Cape Verde sensation proved his worth as a reliable presence when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.8 clearances per game in Ligue 1. He even distributed the ball accurately from the back after completing 84.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
The 23-year-old’s current contract at the French club will expire in the summer of 2026 which could make it tough for the Magpies to get a deal done for him on the cheap this off-season.
What Will Costa Bring To Newcastle United?
Costa is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.90m, the Cape Verde sensation can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, he is still unproven at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in the Premier League if Newcastle manage to snap him up this summer.
Costa would bring more bite and steel to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s defence. He is good enough to compete for regular first-team football at St. James’ Park next season. At 23, Costa has got a bright future ahead of him, so Howe would be wise to try everything in his power to bring him to the Tyneside club in this transfer window.
