In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Newcastle United are among the clubs hoping to land Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. It is understood that the Magpies would have to compete with Fulham, West Ham United and Southampton in the race to sign the Scotland international this summer.
McTominay’s Impressive Numbers At Old Trafford
McTominay had a decent campaign at the Mancunian club after he put in a series of solid displays for them in the middle of the park. The Scottish midfield ace scored ten goals and grabbed three assists in 43 matches for Man United last season across all competitions.
The 27-year-old was a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.7 clearances and 1.4 shots per game in the Premier League. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after making 81.5% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Man United will expire at the end of next season. Hence, the Magpies could potentially snap him up on a cut-price deal this summer.
Will McTominay Be A Good Fit For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
McTominay can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition at the centre of the park. He usually clears the danger when needed and can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range. McTominay is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a holding midfielder or play in the number ten position if told to do so by his manager.
The Scotland international did well to add a handful of goals and assists to his game last season. He has also got a wealth of experience in Premier League football. McTominay would inject more quality and depth into Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He is good enough to help the Magpies push for European football once again in the coming seasons.
At 27, McTominay is about to enter his prime which makes him a good fit for Newcastle‘s needs at the moment. Therefore, Howe would be wise to go all out to bring the Man United talent to St. James’ Park in this summer transfer period.
