According to The Telegraph, Manchester United have opened talks with Chelsea to discuss the possible transfer of Raheem Sterling before the summer window closes. The deal is likely to be a swap deal which will see Jadon Sancho going the other way.
Raheem Sterling’s ups and downs
Raheem Sterling developed his initial football at Liverpool but left the Anfield following a contract dispute. He then joined Manchester City, where he came into the limelight and enjoyed great success. However, things changed in the coming years as he fell down the packs.
Sterling’s next destination was Chelsea where he arrived two years ago. Last season, he netted 10 goals and provided eight assists in 43 games. He averaged 1.5 shots, 1 key pass, and 1.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Englishman can play in multiple advanced positions but is naturally a winger. He likes to cut in towards goals and create threats. He is a good dribbler and can take long-range shots. However, the player doesn’t offer enough defensive aspects.
A good deal for all the parties
Raheem Sterling was one of Chelsea’s new signings under the new regime. However, the deal hasn’t gone as expected. Despite the player doing decently well last season, he has been told to find a new home as he isn’t in the plans of new boss Enzo Maresca.
Manchester United are looking to take advantage of the situation and lure away the winger. In return, they are willing to offer Jadon Sancho, who is no longer wanted by Erik Ten Hag. It could be a win-win situation for all the parties involved.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea have to be quick in negotiations as there isn’t much time left in the window. It will be interesting to see if they can reach an agreement and materialize the deal or not.
