In a recent report, talkSPORT mentioned that Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is generating interest from a few English clubs this summer. It has been claimed that Ipswich Town have joined Aston Villa and Fulham in the race to land the English talent from the Mancunian club in this transfer window.
Phillips’ Decent Loan Spell At West Ham
Phillips was a decent loan spell at West Ham United last season and managed to catch the eye at times for them in the middle of the park. The English midfield ace featured in ten matches for the Hammers in the previous campaign but failed to score or create a goal for them across various competitions.
The 28-year-old made most of his appearances off the bench but did well to average 1.4 tackles and 0.5 interceptions per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even accurate with his ball distribution after completing 80% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Man City will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, there is no immediate need for Pep Guardiola to cash in on him this month.
What Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Do With Regards To Phillips?
Phillips loves a tackle and can make life tough for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can make the odd interception for his team when he is playing well on the pitch. The English sensation is a good passer of the ball as well but needs to add more goals and assists to his game in the future. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a central defender if told to do so.
Phillips is currently not a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium. Thus, it is only fair to the player if Pep Guardiola allows him to leave before the end of this summer transfer window.
At 28, Phillips is playing in his prime, so Man City should consider cutting him loose this month. Guardiola can use the fee generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of his Man City squad this summer.
