In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that Manchester City are set to offer James McAtee a new contract. It is understood that the Mancunian club are hoping to tie the talented playmaker down to a new deal soon.
McAtee’s Impressive Loan Spell At Sheffield United
The 21-year-old had an encouraging loan spell at Sheffield United in the previous campaign when he put in a run of influential displays for them in the Premier League. McAtee made 33 appearances for the Blades last season, scoring five goals and picking up four assists in multiple competitions.
The English youngster proved his worth in the middle of the park by averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.9 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he lacked quality when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 72% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Man City will run out in the summer of 2026. Thus, it makes sense for the Mancunian club to offer him a fresh contract so that they can keep hold of him for the long run.
Manchester City Are Set To Offer McAtee A New Contract: Good Move For Both Parties?
McAtee loves a tackle and can strike the ball with power and precision from long range. He has got the vision to create some decent chances for his teammates in the final third. The English sensation is a good dribbler with the ball as well. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play in the number ten position or as a right-sided wide player if required.
McAtee has already shown glimpses of what he is capable of in Man City‘s Community Shield final win over Manchester United recently. At 21, he has the potential to be a future star at the Etihad Stadium as long as he continues to develop with each season.
Therefore, it is only logical for Man City to try and tie McAtee down to a new contract as it will be a good move for both the player and the Mancunian club in the long run. However, Pep Guardiola has to be patient with his progress before he can unlock the best out of the gifted starlet.
