According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool have joined the race to sign RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer. It should be noted that Arsenal have been linked to the player for a long and they are even ready to pay his release clause.
Who is Joan Garcia?
Joan Garcia came through the ranks of RCD Espanyol’s Academy. He made his senior team debut in 2021 but it was only last season when he came into the limelight. He was handed the starting role in the second half, where he managed to impress everyone.
Garcia featured in 21 games last season and managed to keep 12 clean sheets while conceding only 10 goals. He helped the Spanish side return to the top flight. He was also part of the Spanish side that won the gold in the recent Olympics.
The Spanish goalkeeper is a bright prospect for the future. He is excellent at blocking shots and commands his area really well. However, he needs to work on his passing to be integrated into the top-tier sides. As the player is still young, he can surely improve that aspect.
Liverpool can give stiff competition to Arsenal for Joan Garcia
Liverpool are keeping tabs on Joan Garcia as they look for a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been a key member over the past decade. However, as he is on the wrong side of 30, he needs to be replaced soon.
The Reds have Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as their priority. They are even close to securing his services before the summer window closes. However, if the deal doesn’t materialize for some reason, they are preparing to identify alternatives.
Garcia could be a good solution given his immense potential. The young goalie can improve under the coaching of Arne Slot and emerge as an elite name. He had a release clause of €25 million, which increased to €30 million after August 15.
