According to François Plateau, Liverpool could knock on the doors of Inter Milan to discuss the possible transfer of Alessandro Bastoni this summer. The Premier League side want to sign the defender only if Joe Gomez departs the club.
Alessandro Bastoni has done well so far
Alessandro Bastoni came into the limelight during his stint at Atalanta. He moved to Inter Milan in the summer of 2017 and then spent the next two years on a loan spell. Later he finally got his opportunities with the Italian side, which he managed to utilize well.
Bastoni has been one of the solid performers in Serie A over the past few seasons. He featured in 31 games last season, netting once and providing four assists. He averaged 1 tackle, 0.6 interceptions, and 2.5 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Italian started his career as a full-back but later transformed into a centre-back. He is solid with his tackles and positions himself really well. He can maintain high intensity for the entire 90 minutes and is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet.
All depends upon Joe Gomez
Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has been linked to a move away for some time now. The club doesn’t prefer him to leave this summer as he still has three years left on his contract. However, the management won’t stand in between if the player decides to leave.
Hence, the Reds want to remain prepared for all the scenarios. If Gomez takes an exit, they are eyeing a move for Alessandro Bastoni. The pursuit makes sense as the player is extremely talented and has proven he takes in the Italian league.
Liverpool doesn’t have a left-footed defender in their squad and Bastoni can fill that gap. The 25-year-old can be used as a centre-back or also provide cover for the left full-back role. He can serve Anfield for many years to come. However, Inter Milan might not allow his departure without finding a proper replacement.
