According to Football Insider, Liverpool have their eyes on Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie for this summer window. The Premier League club can make a move for the player if they lose another defender in the remaining days of the window.
Piero Hincapie has impressive stats
Piero Hincapie has been an integral part of Bayer Leverkusen ever since arriving in the summer of 2021. He has established himself as a reliable player with solid performances. Last season, he played an instrumental role in the club’s success.
Hincapie featured in 43 games in the 2023-24 season, netting a goal and assisting once. He averaged 1.9 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 2.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored). His progress has caught the attention of the major clubs across Europe.
The Ecuador international is an aggressive-minded defender. He likes to stay close to his man and make his presence feel whether it’s on the ground or aerial. He can adapt to different positions and is comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Piero Hincapie will be a long-term investment
Liverpool’s interest in Piero Hincapie is understandable as they have made no reinforcement this summer so far. They sanctioned the move of Sepp van den Berg to Brentford but didn’t opt for any replacement. Even Joe Gomez is close to the department and if that happens, they will surely need a fill.
If Gomez exits the club, the Reds are planning to go after Hincapie as he would be a great addition. He has all the qualities to succeed at Anfield and turn into an elite defender. He can play as a centre-back and also provide cover for left-back Andrew Robertson if needed.
Even in the long run, the 22-year-old will be extremely useful. As Ibrahima Konate is injury-prone and Virgil van Dijk is in the twilight of his career, Liverpool need a defender who can serve for many years to come.
