According to Sky Sports‘ Anton Toloui, Liverpool are open to listening to offers for Joe Gomez this summer. The club believe that they have enough options in Gomez’s position and it would make sense to raise funds by letting him leave.
Joe Gomez is a Liverpool veteran
Joe Gomez has been one of Liverpool’s key players over the past decade. Joining the club in 2015, he is the longest server in their present squad. His best came under the coaching of Jurgen Klopp, who used him effectively and gave him enough confidence.
Gomez played a crucial role even last season when Liverpool contended for multiple trophies. He featured in 51 games and provided three assists. He averaged 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 1.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The English international is versatile to featured anywhere in the defender or even in the midfield. He is an intelligent player who finds good positions. With accurate passing and defensive sense, he is a quality resource to have.
Liverpool can get Anthony Gordon at a reduced price
Earlier, it was considered that Joe Gomez would continue to serve Liverpool beyond the last season. But things have changed over the past few weeks. The English outfit believes that they have enough backups available for the positions Gomez features.
The Reds have the likes of Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate Virgil van Dijk and Sepp van den Berg to feature at the heart of the defence. Kostas Tsimikas, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley are the ones who will feature as the full-backs.
Hence, it would be a better option if Liverpool offloads Gomez this summer. The club even had an offer from Newcastle United earlier. But the deal didn’t advance as the Reds weren’t keen on selling Gomez at that time.
However, Liverpool can again approach the Magpies on the 27-year-old’s case. In return, they can ask them to include Anthony Gordon, the player who they wish to acquire.
