In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Everton are leading the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan this summer. It has been mentioned that the Toffees are ahead of Aston Villa in the race to recruit the English talent this off-season.
Phillips’ Tough Season At The Etihad Stadium
Phillips had a difficult campaign at the Mancunian club recently as he struggled to give a good account of himself at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. The English midfield ace featured in just 20 matches for Man City last season, scoring one goal in various competitions.
The 28-year-old made all of his league appearances as a substitute but did well to average 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He even took care of the ball well when distributing it from midfield after making 89.7% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Man City will expire in the summer of 2028. Hence, it is only logical for Everton to try and arrange a loan move for him in this transfer window.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Snap Phillips Up This Summer?
Phillips can provide adequate protection for his teammates at the back when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to earn possession back for his side at the centre of the park.
The English talent usually clears his lines when needed and is an accurate passer of the ball. However, he has to find a way to earn more first-team starts if he wants to improve as a footballer.
Phillips would bring more bite and steel to Everton head coach Sean Dyche’s midfield. He is good enough to compete for regular first-team football at Goodison Park next season. Therefore, it makes sense for the Merseyside club to try and sign him on a season-long loan deal this summer.
Phillips is good enough to help the Toffees challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League. Thus, Dyche should consider trying everything in his power to sign him on loan this off-season.
