According to The Sun, Chelsea could be making a late attempt to sign Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. The former club will only go after him if they fail to secure the services of highly-rated striker Victor Osimhen.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries recently
Dominic Calvert-Lewin moved to Everton in the summer of 2016 from Sheffield United. As time passed, he established himself as one of the key members of the squad. He is often regarded as one of the best strikers in the English league.
However, Calvert-Lewin’s role has seen a downgrade due to his fitness issues. He featured in 38 games last season, netting eight goals and providing three assists. He averaged 2.3 shots, 0.8 key passes, and 0.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Englishman positions himself in between the defenders and also makes in-behind runs. He is good at attacking the spaces and can also create good passes for his teammates. With clinical finishes and aerial dominance, he is a quality striker.
Victor Osimhen wants a high salary
Chelsea’s interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks more of a desperate move. They have probably left it too late to secure a striker and might have to compromise on the quality. While they are keen on signing Victor Osimhen and are even in negotiations, there is a high probability of not cracking a deal.
The Nigerian has a release clause of £110 million, which seems too big. Moreover, Osimhen wants a £500,000-a-week wage to sign for Stamford Bridge. For now, the demands look unrealistically high and the Blues might have to drop the pursuit.
If that happens, Chelsea will try signing Calvert-Lewin, who is in the last stage of his contract. Though there is little time left for the summer window to close, an agreement could be reached. Fans will have to wait for more developments around this story.
