In a recent segment with Last Word on Spurs, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Seth revealed that Barcelona are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon this month. Seth said,
“Yeah, potentially. I mean, whenever I hear that Barcelona are in for a player it’s always with a pinch of salt. They’re happy to let Ilkay Gundogan leave, because they’re wanting to reduce the wage bill, but also because they want to register Dani Olmo.
“With regards to Reguilon, they will try to do a deal on their terms rather than on Tottenham’s terms. Tottenham want to make a sale, that is 100% the case. Can Barcelona purchase him? We know he won’t cost that much, Barcelona will be well aware that he is a player Tottenham want to sell.”
Reguilon’s Impressive Loan Spell At Brentford
Reguilon had a decent loan spell at Brentford last season when he put in a few eye-catching displays for them on the left flank. The Spanish talent participated in 16 matches for the Bees in the previous campaign, picking up four assists in all competitions.
The 27-year-old proved his worth by averaging 2.8 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 2.1 clearances, 0.8 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he was a bit untidy with his ball distribution after making just 71.8% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Will Reguilon Be A Good Fit For Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick?
Reguilon is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and is a good dribbler with the ball as well.
The Spanish sensation can engineer the odd chance for his teammates from the left flank and can strike the ball well from long range. He is primarily a left-back but can also serve as a left-sided wide player if needed.
Reguilon would no doubt enhance the quality of Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s squad. He is good enough to fight for regular first-team football at the Nou Camp this season. At 27, Reguilon is playing in his prime which makes him a decent fit for the Catalan club in the short term.
