In a recent report, Sport stated that Barcelona are eyeing a move for Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah this summer. It has been claimed that the Catalan club could move in for the German centre-back if they end up losing Eric Garcia this month.
Tah’s Impressive Form In German Football
Tah had a solid campaign at the German club recently as he helped them win the Bundesliga title. The 28-year-old featured in 48 matches for Bayer Leverkusen last season, scoring six goals and earning one assist across all fronts.
The German defender was a rock at the back and deserves credit for averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after making 94.7% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will run out at the end of next season which could open the door for the Catalan club to sign him on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.
What Will Tah Add To Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick’s Side?
Tah is a tough-tackling defender who can sense the danger well to earn possession back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can use his strong 1.95m frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his team.
The German sensation is an accurate passer of the ball as well. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Spain if Barca manage to snap him up in this transfer window. Still, there is no denying that Tah would add more bite and steel to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s backline.
The Leverkusen talent is more than capable of securing a regular first-team spot at the Nou Camp this season. He might even help the Catalan giants compete for some major trophies in the coming seasons.
At 28, Tah is playing in his prime right now but is on an expiring contract at the German club. Therefore, Flick should focus on trying everything in his power to bring him to the Nou Camp before the end of this summer transfer period.
