In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Aston Villa are showing interest in PSV Eindhoven defender Lutsharel Geertruida this summer. Romano said,
“There is interest from Aston Villa on player side, already in concrete talks. Still not advanced, club to club, so still early stages club to club, because it’s important to understand what happens with Diego Carlos.
“So if Diego Carlos leaves with interest from Fulham, there is a possibility for Aston Villa to attack the situation and try to bring in Geertruida.
“So talks are still ongoing, but before saying that it’s closed or almost done, we need to see what happens with Diego Carlos and Fulham.”
Geertruida’s Impressive Form In Dutch Football
Geertruida had a solid campaign at the Dutch club recently as he was responsible for producing a string of impressive displays on the right side of their backline. The 24-year-old registered nine goals and grabbed five assists in 47 matches for PSV Eindhoven last season across all competitions.
The Dutch full-back was a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Dutch Eredivisie. He was even careful with his ball distribution after completing 91.6% of his attempted passes in the Dutch top tier (stats via whoscored).
What Will Geertruida Bring To Aston Villa?
Geertruida is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range.
The Dutch full-back is a good dribbler with the ball as well and can set up a few decent plays for others around him in the final third. He mainly operates as a right-back but can also serve as a centre-back or play as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so.
Geertruida will bring more quality to Aston Villa‘s defence. He will even help Unai Emery’s side to compete across all fronts in the coming seasons. Therefore, the West Midlands club would be wise to lure him to Villa Park in this summer transfer window.
